Jerry Seinfeld, most famously known for his comedic performance on the nine-season NBC sitcom, also dealt with a not so funny heel pain through most of his career. On April 23, 2013, Seinfeld visited the New York College of Podiatric Medicine to recognize Dr. Joseph D’Amico, DPM, in terminating his 30-year long battle with heel pain.

Featured in APMA News Magazine, Dr. D’Amico explains the treatment process he performed to alleviate Seinfeld’s steps to a pain-free return to life. Examining Seinfeld’s previous doctor visits, Dr. D’Amico learned he would have to go further in solving this problem. Most patients with similar indications of heel pain are casted foot inserts, also known as orthotics. Seinfeld’s casts were of older molds of his feet, that became problematic and deepening the root of the pain even further.

The main function of orthotics is to provide support for the foot by realigning foot joints while standing, walking, or even running. Many foot issues can lead to knee, hip, and spine conditions.

Process of Orthorics:

  1. Assessment: Detailed biomechanic examinations are done to get a thorough verification of foot problem. Here is where physical, gait analysis, footwear, and reviews of overall past injuries are evaluated.

In the search for finding permanent cure, the treatments Dr. D’Amico found to best relieve Seinfeld’s symptons included examinations of biomechanics and gait analysis. What is Biomechanics?

Biomechanics: the study of body movements and of the forces acting on the musculoskeletal system

What is Gait Analysis?

Gait Analysis: method used to assess the way we walk/run to highlight any biomechanical abnormalities

2. Casting: Over 30+ measurements are taken to mold the perfect cast.

3. Manufacture: Molds are made of a vacuum, heated material that help generate a 3D cast including semi-rigid and rigid thermoplastics to support any of the foot’s functions.

4. Fitting & Follow-Up: Dispensed and fitted. Dr. D’Amico conducted the same examinations several weeks after the initial visit and notated the effectiveness of the orthotics for Seinfeld.

Dr. D’Amico executed a full observational and computer assisted gait anaylsis which lead to Seinfeld using orthotics to heal the pain. The only difference in Dr. D’Amico and previous doctors tests were the ways to achieve the best outcome. Dr. D’Amico invested more time into the evalation, treatment, and approach on healing Seinfeld’s heel pain once and for all. Treatments with biomechanics allowed Dr. D’Amico to invest time into evaluating, treating, & approaching Seinfeld’s heel pain quickly and effectively.
