Sedalia Laser Pain Center, owned by Connie Kiburz RN BSN CRNA, formed the concept of opening the center to aid patients with injuries causing chronic pain through simpler and safer form of technology: MLS Laser Treatment. Dr. Douglas Kiburz, husband of the owner, attended a meeting in D.C. earlier 2014.
“Doug had gone to a meeting and it wasn’t even about the laser,” she said. “He sat at a table with two gentlemen from Florida at the orthopedic meeting. And he asked them what was going on in Florida and that’s when they told him, cold-wave laser. They gave him a card, and he placed it in his pocket and didn’t look at it again until he got home.”
The couple researched into the new possible treatment and found almost 35 years worth of development internationally and FDA approved since 2008. In addition, they found that Harvard University had completed a series of clinical studies to show to efficiency of this new laser treatment. The Kiburz couple immediately made Sedalia Laser Pain Center a full service center and notably the only one available in a 500-mile radius.
What is MLS Laser Treatment?
The MLS Laser essentially converts light into biochemical energy that results in normal cell function therefore stopping pain, reducing swelling at site of injury, and causing no side effects.
- uses a light energy to accelerate body’s natural healing process
- laser beam moves over skin as such light energy (photons) penetrates tissue with interaction of various molecules (chromophores) that cause different biological effects
- optimized all factors in therapeutic laser providing considerable reduced treatment time while maintaining complete patient safety.
- penetrates 2.25 inches into the projected injury or pain area to get into the mitrochondria
MLS intended to provide topical heating for the purpose of elevating tissue temperature for temporary relief of muscle, joint pain and stiffness, arthritis pain, muscle spasm, and the temporary increase in local blood circulation and overall promoting relaxation of muscles.

Connie Kiburz opened Sedalia Laser Pain Center in Sedalia, MO where there is about 42,000 people in the city that have chronic joint problems. Since opening the center, she has seen a significant amount of patients and about 80% of them have dramatic decrease in pain level (being on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, their pain levels have charted from an initial 8 to post treatment 2). One patient in particular is a 17 year old girl who plays basketball. She injured herself with a high-ankle sprain, typically calls for 6 weeks of down time rest, but her ankle was healed perfectly in 5 weeks and continues to play basketball for her high school team. Kiburz believes that youth has a huge effect on how quickly the treatment can heal a patient.
Sedalia Laser Pain Center cordially sets up massages for specific treatments with Linda Irby, owner of Gifted Touch Therapeutic Massage and Reflexology). Connie hopes to offer infrared socks to keep feet warm and “energized”, lumbar supports and compression gloves for arthritic hands and neck pillows.
“Our intention is to develop a comfort store, so when you get better with MLS Laser, you can stay that way….common sense aids to better living,” said Kiburz. “We are looking for products that make life safer and simpler.”
